In India, the holding of elections takes place every five years. All citizens who have attained the age of 18 have a patriotic duty to participate in the elections. But for anyone to participate in the elections they must register with the Electoral Commission of India as a voter. One is considered a registered voter if their name appears on the voter’s list in their constituency and if they hold a Voter ID card.Sponsored Links
Electoral Commission of India:
At present, the body mandated to manage and run elections in India is the Electoral Commission of India. Previously this mandate rested with the Chief Election Officer before it was passed on to the Electoral Commission of India which is widely seen as having brought about significant progress and improvements in the electoral process.
One of the ways the electoral process has improved in India under the Electoral Commission of India is the introduction of online voter registration. Before the new method of online voter registration, a manual lengthy and tedious process was in place and it involved queuing, manually filling forms and so on. This no doubt discouraged a significant portion of the population from registering as voters and consequently denying them their democratic right and duty to vote.
The introduction of online voter registration has thus eased the process and has gained wide acceptance even by rural communities in India. Online voter registration has also been credited with an increase in enrolment of youth voters.Sponsored Links
